Karen Boylan

Painting by Karen BoylanKaren Boylan Portrait PhotoA Montana native, Karen Boylan draws her inspiration from the beautiful surroundings in which she lives and her experience as a rancher to create the detailed paintings that have brought her recognition through numerous awards.  Since graduating from Montana State University, she has ranched with her husband and family in the Beartooth Mountains of Red Lodge and the Gallatin Valley of Bozeman, Montana.  Her paintings are created out of admiration and respect for the western style of life and the animals she works with.  Her fascination with horses began at an early age since her life revolved around these magnificent animals – competing in gymkhanas (games on horseback), horse shows and rodeos, and are still an essential part of the ranch work she is involved in today.

As well as showing her work throughout the country, Boylan participates in the Western Masters Art Show(formerly the C.M. Russell Show) in Great Falls, Montana, the Cowboy Christmas Show & Sale during the NFR in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Ellensburg National Art Show & Auction in Ellensburg, Washington, the Northern International Livestock Exposition in Billings, Montana, the Mountain Oyster Club in Tuscon Arizona, and the Western Artists of America Show in Corsicana, Texas.  Boylan is a member of the Western Heritage Artists Association, the Western Art Association, the Western Artists of America, and Northwest Artists.

“As a western and wildlife artist, I try to express what I experience while striving for accuracy in anatomy of the animals as well as their personality and unique behavior.  Attention to detail is  the most important aspect of my work.  I hope the viewer will make a connection or feel a kinship with the animal and its environment.  Whether calving, branding, doctoring, or just moving cattle, I love what I do and relish the physical challenge as well as the mental change that, hopefully, gives freshness and new life to my paintings.”
