The high, dry valley in West Texas was home to the Buffalo Soldiers after the Civil War—these black troops safeguarded a line of forts on a 600-mile-long road between San Antonio and El Paso from Apache and Comanche raids for more than 20 years. This painting oil on canvas was donated to the city of Mason, Texas home of Fort Mason and hangs in the city’s museum.
