In 1993, after twenty years in the applied arts, Patrick Landes had the good fortune to begin re-acquainting himself with the ranching community of southern Alberta and northern Montana.
The manifestation of this re-acquaintance is in his paintings. This Alberta artist paints what he knows best; the ranch lands of the Great Northern Plains.
A rigorous career of informal study of all things “western” and, several courses at the University of “Cowboyology”, has given Patrick a solid understanding of the value of proficient, balanced representation. His preference for painting is the veracity of memory rather than record.
Technically, his preferred medium is oil paint on canvas.
Aesthetically, his interests are the works of Charles M. Russell, Edward Borein and Jack King.
With work hanging in private and corporate collections, Patrick’s art interest is to accurately portray, in a traditional manner, the color, romance and action narrative of the contemporary west. Limited only by the scope of artistic licence and hard earned miles of first hand experience, it is to paint the visual language of open horizons, good horses, smart dogs, tough cattle and even tougher people.
